OneDrive File Transfer Guide for Students

This guide will help you transfer your OneDrive files before your SDSU student account access ends.

Step 1: Check Storage Usage & Download Your Files

  1. Log into OneDrive at https://jackssdstate-my.sharepoint.com/ using your student credentials.
  2. In the bottom-left corner, check how much storage you've used (e.g., '2.3 GB of 50 GB used').
  3. Use this number to anticipate how much free space you'll need on your computer, external drive, or cloud storage.
  4. If you have a lot of data or a slow connection, download files in smaller chunks (e.g., by folder).
  5. Select a folder or group of files and folders and click the 'Download' button. OneDrive will compress them into a .zip file.
  6. Extract the .zip file using your system's unzip tool.
  7. Repeat as needed until all files are downloaded.

Step 2: Choose Where to Move Your Files

Option A: Upload to a personal Cloud Storage Service

  1. Sign in to your preferred cloud storage service (e.g., Dropbox, iCloud, Box).
  2. Use the service's upload feature to add your downloaded files or folders.
  3. Organize your files as needed within the cloud storage platform.

Option B: Copy to an External Drive

  1. Plug in your external drive.
  2. Open the folder containing your extracted OneDrive files.
  3. Drag and drop the files into your external drive.
  4. Safely eject the drive when done.

Step 3: Clean Up Your OneDrive

  1. Double-check that all important files have been successfully transferred.
  2. Return to https://jackssdstate-my.sharepoint.com/ and sign in.
  3. Select all the files and folders that you transferred.
  4. Click the 'Delete' icon to remove them.
  5. Go to the Recycle Bin and click 'Empty recycle bin' to permanently delete the files.
