Question
How can parents support their student through the transition to college?
Answer
Encourage your student to contact the Office of Disability Services as early as possible, especially if they need housing accommodations. It is better for a student to have approved accommodations they may not use than to need them later without having them in place.
Review any required documentation together so that your student understands their diagnosis and feels confident explaining their accommodation needs. Being able to clearly communicate this information helps them advocate for themselves on campus.
Throughout their college journey, offer support while also encouraging independence. College is an opportunity for students to take charge of their education and learn how to manage their needs with confidence.
