D2L Support for Non-SDSU Users

Overview
Non-SDSU users (e.g., Nursing Refresher Course participants) use D2L for distance learning but are not provisioned through Banner and do not use SDSU Single Sign-On (SSO). Their accounts are manually created and managed by the academic programs.

Who Are These Users?

  • Participants in non-credit programs:
    • Nursing Continuing Education (CNE)
    • GPIDEA
    • Pharmacy Teaching Certificate
    • Extension training
  • They log in via the Non-SDSU link at https://d2l.sdstate.edu
  • They are not registered students in the BOR system and do not use Self Registration

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

  • These non-SDSU users see below prompt when logging into D2L to finish the setup. They can use Duo to scan the QR code to add their D2L’s 2FA account.

  • 2FA is required for Non-SDSU users accessing D2L
  • Any 2FA app, such as Google or MS Authenticator are allowed, but Duo is strongly recommended
    • Duo users will not be in our Duo admin portal
  • Setup steps:
    1. Install an authenticator app (e.g., Duo Mobile, Google Authenticator)
    2. Scan the QR code shown during D2L login
    3. Enter the code from the app to complete setup
  • Email-based 2FA may be available starting October 2025

Common Support Issues

  • Duo Mobile setup
  • LockDown Browser malfunctions
  • Confusion about login process or account status

Support Guidance

  • Do not dismiss these users by saying “You are not a student, we cannot help you”
  • Instead, ask which program they are in and guide them accordingly
  • Refer to program contacts if needed

Admin Access For the Nursing Refresher Course, D2L admin access is held by:

  • Linda Lemme
  • Tracy Roiger
  • Julie Mendelson

They can add/remove participants and manage course access.

Best Practices for Techs

  • Document the call in TDX
  • Always ask which program the user is part of
  • Confirm they are using the Non-SDSU login link
  • Assist with Duo or other authenticator app setup
  • Assist with LockDown Browser issues
  • Escalate or refer to program contacts when needed
