Steps for activating Microsoft Authenticator after a reset

✅ Prerequisites

• You have access to your new phone.
• You have access to a computer.
• You can know your South Dakota State University Microsoft account information.
• The Microsoft Authenticator app is installed on your new phone.

📲 Step 1: Install Microsoft Authenticator

1. Open the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
2. Search for Microsoft Authenticator.
3. Tap Install and wait for the app to download.

🗑️ Step 2: Remove Old Account (If Present)

1. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your new phone.
2. If your South Dakota State University account is already listed (from a backup or previous setup):
   • Tap the three dots (⋮) or gear icon next to the account.
   • Select Remove account or Delete.
   • Confirm the removal.

This ensures a clean setup and avoids conflicts with the new QR code.

🔁 Step 3: Sign In to Your South Dakota State University Account

1. On your computer, go to: https://aka.ms/mfasetup
2. Sign in with your South Dakota State University email address and password.
3. You’ll be prompted to set up your sign-in method.

1. On your phone, open the Microsoft Authenticator app.
2. Tap the "+" (Add Account) button.
3. Choose "Work or school account".
4. Select "Scan QR code".

🧾 Step 5: Scan the QR Code

1. On your computer screen, a QR code will appear.
2. Use your phone to scan the QR code with the Authenticator app.
3. The account will be added to your app.

✅ Step 6: Confirm Setup

1. After scanning, click Next on your computer.
2. Microsoft will send a test notification to your phone.
3. Approve the notification in the Authenticator app.
